Pregnancy is exciting, but pregnancy during the winter months can be a little different. Many women worry about their pregnancies during the cold weather for a whole host of different reasons. For some, it’s the weather conditions, for others, it’s the effects winter has on the body. We have some tips for coping with a winter pregnancy.
Stay Hydrated
Making sure that your body is hydrated is important at any time, but it is a little more important during pregnancy. Keep a bottle of water near you at all times and take small sips. You can also drink things like hot chocolate, and some herbal teas.
Some herbal teas aren’t suitable during pregnancy, and almost all others should only be taken in moderation. Some women report that ginger and mint teas can help ease nausea and help with morning sickness.
You can also try adding fruit to your water, diluted juice, or even try having a mocktail. Again, mocktails should only be taken in moderation, as they tend to be very sweet and high in sugar.
Use Skincare
Even if you’re not pregnant during winter, you may need to change your usual skincare to a more moisturising routine. The harsh winter weather can dry your skin out and cause some itching and irritation. During pregnancy, this can worsen. Use a moisturising body lotion on your bump, and a good moisturiser on your face to help prevent dry, itchy skin.
Don’t forget to use an SPF on your face as well. Look for one that has other nourishing ingredients such as vitamin E.
Wrap up Warm
Wear clothes that will keep you warm. It’s best to wear lighter layers of natural, breathable fabrics. If the weather is going to be very cold, don’t forget to wear a hat, gloves, and a scarf as well. Make sure that you have a waterproof coat, or some sort of waterproof outer layer.
Rest
Rest when you need it. If you feel tired, take a nap. If household chores are overwhelming, ask for help with them. Pregnancy can be physically draining, and it’s ok for you to admit that you’re tired.
You should also try not to schedule too much for you to do during the winter months. Take things slow and steady. If you feel like visiting friends, or going for a short walk, then do so, but don’t feel obligated to have a daily walk if you’re just not feeling up for it.
Eat Well
Good nutrition is important when you’re pregnant at any time of year, but it can be a little bit more important during the winter. Fill up on soups, stews, and casseroles, just make sure that they’re loaded with veggies, and are full of nutrition.
